When to Travel | Weather

There is something brilliant about Japan; whenever you go, it will always be beautiful, exciting and awe inspiring. The weather changes drastically with the seasons, as well as with the region. Your trip in January would be a completely different experience to your trip in September. The best time to travel is always… depending on what you want to do and see, of course! If you want to ski, go in winter. If you want a tropical holiday, go in summer.

Spring and autumn bring temperate weather and colourful foliage and flowers. Wintertime is ideal for enjoying winter sports and hot springs, while summer brings a plethora of fascinating festivals. Spring (March to May), with its clear skies and cherry blossoms, is probably the most celebrated Japanese season, but it’s a holiday period for the Japanese and many of the more popular destinations tend to be flooded with tourists. Autumn (September to November) is a great time to travel. The temperatures are pleasant and the Autumn colours in the countryside are fantastic. Winter (December to February) with the exception of Okinawa, can be near bitterly cold if you aren’t used to cold weather, but great for winter sports. Summer (June to August) is very hot and humid, although it is a good time to visit northern Hokkaido and major tourist attractions as they are generally less crowded.

Take into account that there are numerous festivals, or matsuri, throughout the year too. If you want to be present at a particular one, make note of the dates listed in Festivals under General Info
